Nova Scotia is experiencing a lovely “late summer”, and I am getting settled into my job as a Communications Officer at Nova Scotia Archives & Records Management (NSARM), Department of Tourism, Culture & Heritage.
This opportunity was made possible through Career Starts, which is compromised of several programs which offer “valuable assignments, projects, and skill development within the Nova Scotia government.”
The programs offered by Career Starts are co-operative employment, summer female
mentorship, summer diversity, and my program—post-secondary internship.
Post-secondary internship offers recent graduates the opportunity to gain experience in their field of study. The positions available are full-time for a two-year term. The program has been offered every year since 2002.
In my time at NSARM, I will be assuming communications responsibilities for the organization. Specific areas of work include:
- internal and external communications
- media relations
- events planning
- creation of public announcements, brochures and similar promotional tools
- development and promotion of visual identity
- delivering orientation and training workshops
- designing and assisting with focus groups and public consultations
- assistance with issues management
- undertaking research, including identification of opportunities for communications and PR
My summer job at Historic Properties sparked my interest in local history. This two-year term at NSARM will nourish the history-buff in me, as well as giving me a great start to a career in communications.
My personal life has been very positive, lately. I’m looking at apartments this weekend and plan on moving to
Halifax this November. Convocation is fast approaching, which warrants a much-needed PR reunion.
In the next year I am planning on taking on various knitting projects and saving up for a summer trek around Europe. There might even be a Mac in my near future. And in the even nearer near-future: Thanksgiving! Happy Turkey (or in my case—stuffing, squash, and sweet potato—mmm) Day!
